It’s the most wonderful time of the year… Well, it’s almost Christmas, but that’s not what I’m referring to. NOVEMBURGER, the annual 30-day burger bash is once again upon us!

When I dreamed up the idea of NOVEMBURGER four years ago, it was intended to be a fun, light-hearted event that would help to promote local independent restaurants and raise funds and awareness for the local United Way. Well, in the three years it has been active, NOVEMBURGER has promoted roughly 60 local restaurants and raised over $25,000 for the United Way. This year, those figures are poised to climb dramatically as the festival will be the largest one yet. A whopping total of 73 restaurants in Hamilton and Burlington are participating in NOVEMBURGER 2017. Based on the sales averages of the last few years, we hope to sell over 15,000 burgers this month, and total funds raised for the United Way are expected to top the $40,000 mark.

The United Way of Halton & Hamilton does important work in our community. Their focus is “improving lives locally”. In fact, the dollars raised by our local United Way (Halton & Hamilton) stay in this area, and are used to fund a wide variety of programs and initiatives through nearly 100 organizations and agencies. These programs support the goals of helping kids be all that they can be; moving people from poverty to possibility; and creating healthy people and strong communities. Beyond fundraising, the United Way of Halton & Hamilton works to influence public attitudes and policies, strengthen service network capacity, and measure the impacts of donor support in the community.

November can be a bit of a dreary month, and so it’s the perfect time to get a group of friends together and try a few Novemburgers. Not only will you have a delicious evening out, but you’ll be supporting the business of a local restaurant, and helping to raise funds and awareness for the work of the United Way of Halton & Hamilton. That’s pretty win-win-win if you ask me!

I should make mention of the many fantastic people and partners that make this festival possible. A massive “thank you” to all of the participating restaurants, our team at Make Media, the media channels that help promote the festival, and to all of the dedicated burger-eaters!
